September 2nd, 2009
Contact lens is a corrective measure to improve the vision. It is placed on the cornea of the eye Now a days , it is widely used all over the word. It is used to correct different problems like refractive error, myopia, hypermetropia etc. etc. People who suffer from color deficiency can use “X–chrom” contact lens. Though using the lens can not root out the problem completely but it enables the colorblind persons to distinguish between two colors. Non-refractive disorder of eye can also be corrected with the use of contact lens.
Though the idea of contact lens was first introduced by noted Italian painter, mathematician and philosopher Leonardo da Vinci but Czech chemist Otto Wichterle is credited with its invention.
Both contact lens and glass serve same purposes but people choose to wear contact lens as it is fancy, lightweight and almost invisible. They also like to wear it to change their appearance. It is widely used in the entertainment industry to make eyes look sensational or to have an appearance of a drunkard.
Contact lens may be of various types. Daily wear contact lens should be removed before taking a nap. But extended wear contact lens with improved oxygen permeability can be used for 30 nights at a stretch but the extended lens wearers are often on high risk of being infected with corneal infections and corneal alcers.
Contact lens should be cleaned regularly. Disposable contact lens does not need any cleaning. But in case of other types of contact lens daily cleaning is advised so that it does not get infected with microorganisms.
